Roulette is easy enough to learn the basics of. You essentially place your bets as to where the roulette ball will end up then the table is spun. The final placement of the ball determines if you won or lost.

How It Is Played

Roulette is played on a large table called a roulette table. In the middle is a circular wheel containing either 37 or 38 pockets. French and European tables have 37 pockets, while American tables have 38.

Before the wheel is spun, all bets are placed. Players move their chips to show that they are betting a specific amount, and they tell the dealer what their bet is. The bet can be placed on a specific colour (either red or black), a specific number (0-36, 00) or on a range of numbers (even or odds). The more specific the bet is the higher the payout will be. If the bet is for odds or evens, the payout will be low, as there is a 50/50 chance of a positive result. Payouts will be much higher with a bet on something like red 7.

These are the basic bets, but many other bets are available. The kinds of bets available to you will depend on what he casino allows. The rules can become more complicated as the bets do.

There are two types of bets in roulette- outside and inside bets. Most people are going to go with outside bets, as these are the most common and offer the most favourable odds. The payout may not be as high, but there is less of a chance that the player will lose. The payout for most outside bets is about even, but for inside bets it can be considerably higher.

Outside Bets

Red or Black – As mentioned above, there is a 50% chance that you will get a red result or a black result. The ball has to land on one of them, so your odds are good that you will win this bet. Your bet is that the ball will land on the colour you choose.

Evens or Odds- This works much like the bet above. You still have a 50% chance of winning. If you bet even, then you are betting that the ball will land on a number divisible by two. Odd bets would be for any of the other numbers.

Dozens- Now the numbers on the wheel go from 1-36, but also include 0 and 00 (on an American table). That means there are three dozen numbers. For a dozens bet, you pick which one of the dozens the ball will land in. Your choices are from 1-2, 13-24, and 24-36.

Columns- Each roulette table includes three columns of numbers. Your bet would predict which column the ball ends up in at the end of the spin.

1 to 18 or 19 to 36 – The last outside bet available is choosing which of the halves of the table the ball will land on. You can choose between numbers 1 and 18 or between 19 and 36. Your chances are 50/50 for this bet.

Inside Bets

Now we get into the less common bets. These bets can pay out quite nicely, but your odds of achieving a successful bet are quite low.

Single Number – Most inside bets tend toward single numbers. You pick your number and make the spin then hope the ball lands there.

Double- This bet is split between two different numbers. The payout isn’t as great as for a single bet, but your odds of winning the bet are doubled.

Street – For this bet you are choosing three different numbers along a horizontal line. If any of those numbers is the result from the next spin then you win.

Double Street – With a double street bet you are doubling your odds and giving yourself two horizontal lines of numbers to bet on.

Corner or Square – In this bet, you are choosing four numbers that comprise a square. All these numbers have to be grouped together.

Trio – With a trio bet, you are choosing to bet on a set of three numbers, and one of them must be a zero.

Types of Tables

There are three different main types of tables played in roulette. Many casinos offer all three of them. Their rules vary a bit, so it’s worth looking into each of them individually.

American Roulette – Modern roulette stems from this version of the game. We already mentioned that the American table has an extra pocket. That is for the number 00, and it brings the table up to 38 pockets. This gives the house a slight edge, so if you can help it, you should steer clear of this table. The only reason to pick it over any other table is if the payout is better.

European Roulette – Most roulette players prefer the European version. The only additional pocket beyond the 1-36 ones is one for the number zero. This gives players a slight advantage over players using the American table, and they are more likely to win their bet.

French Roulette – This table can actually be the most beneficial to players. It has the same setup as the European table, but some of the rules are a bit different. The main rule change is that a free roll is allowed for even money bets. This is known as the La Partage Tule, and it ensures that the player is given another chance after they lose their bet on the first spin. After that second spin, if they lost, then they cannot regain their bet.
